St. George’s Pillow Ministry

The Pillow Ministry is an outpouring of hope and solace for those in the hospital and for cancer patients having chemotherapy. What started out in 1999 as way to show support and love for friends and members of St. George’s who were in the hospital, has also become a beacon of comfort for chemo patients at the AP&S Cancer Center. Members of the congregation (yes, mostly the ladies) get together and make brightly patterned pillows – just the right size to squeeze in a hospital bed. Often it’s done as a “team project.” Some cut out the material who pass it on to others who sew the seams who pass it on to others who iron the seams who pass it on to others who put the stuffing in who pass it on to others for the final seam who pass it on to others to put in a plastic bag with a special card from St. George’s. The pillows are then blessed by the priest and available when needed for hospitalized members of the congregation or chemo patients at the Cancer Center.

Turban Ministry

We make turbans to give to female chemo patients who lose their hair.

The Helping Hands Store

We provide volunteers for the Helping Hands community organization. The Helping Hands, a store built on faith and prayer, is a not-for-profit organization designed to provide quality clothing and household items to the West Terre Haute area and surrounding communities. The Helping Hands, located next to the West Vigo IGA, sells quality donated items for a minimal fee (most sell for 25¢ and 50¢). In addition to working at the store, St. George parishioners donate items to The Helping Hands. Proceeds from The Helping Hands go to provide turkeys for the Providence Pantry at Thanksgiving, outfit school children at Christmas, provide clothing and household items to burnout victims, scholarships to West Vigo High School seniors, purchase bicycles for the Exchange Club Bikes for Tykes program, and contribute to the West Terre Haute Town Board emergency fund and the West Vigo Ministerial Alliance.

Terre Haute Humane Society & Shelter

We donate newspapers and other items to the shelter.
